X Communities is now on the closing soon list. X is shutting down the interest-based group feature on May 30, 2026, after initially planning an earlier May 6 removal. The deadline was reportedly extended after backlash from creators and users who relied on Communities for fan groups, niche discussions, and topic-based spaces.
Communities originally launched in 2021, when the platform was still known as Twitter, as a way for users to post and discuss around shared interests inside dedicated groups. X now says the feature saw low adoption and became difficult to manage because of spam, scams, and moderation pressure. Reports note that X product head Nikita Bier said usage was extremely small compared with the wider platform, while spam and abuse reports made the feature costly to maintain.
Instead of keeping Communities as a Reddit-style group feature, X is pushing users toward XChat group links and Grok-powered Custom Timelines. XChat group links are meant to help community admins move members into group chats, while Custom Timelines will create personalized topic feeds that users can pin to their home tab.
